Welcome Class of 2025!

This September we were excited to welcome 84 accomplished leaders as they began their participation in our Immersion Programs, the Leadership CORPS Program and the Emerging Leaders Program. As is our tradition, we launched the program year with a two-day, Opening Session with both classes together, establishing the foundation for our year. The two-day format gave us time to dive deeply into elements of our Immersion Programs: civic understanding and engagement, leadership skill development, and building cross-sector relationships.

Setting the stage for civic understanding, participants heard from San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy who provided an in-depth overview of the County structure, services, and important initiatives underway, and also offered inspiration and recommendations to the leaders in the room about how they could impact the future.

Laura Costain and Rahul Khatod, two of our expert leadership coaches, led the class participants through thoughtful reflections and discussion as they each developed their own Personal Purpose Statement. It was a powerful experience for everyone!

“Writing my purpose, very eye-opening experience.”
“The purpose exercise was well done. I will continue to reflect on it. It was such a gift to have this time of self-reflection.”
“I will put my Purpose up where I can see it every day.”

Another highlight was hearing from expert speaker and Futurist Ilana Lipsett, who wrapped up the Opening Session by giving participants a sense of agency and empowerment in designing the future — for themselves, their organizations, communities, and San Mateo County. Ilana’s presentation stretched their thinking and gave them new leadership tools.

Developing relationships amongst the members of the Class of 2025 that will ultimately foster cross-sector collaboration and a diverse pipeline of leadership talent is a key outcome for our Immersion Programs. Participants had many opportunities to get to know their classmates over these two days, and will have many more in the future.

“The Class of 2025 includes leaders from all sectors of San Mateo County, business, government, and nonprofits, who are like-minded in their passion to affect change,” said Margi Power, Leadership Council SMC Co-President. “The Class includes 64% people of color and represents the rich diversity of expertise and lived experiences in our County. It was great to see them connecting over the two days.”

“Such a great program so far. I can just imagine what the next months will look like.”
“The content, volume of content, pacing, and presentation were all excellent; I really appreciated [that] it accommodated different learning styles, and as very hands-on, each section built on the other and all activities were very pragmatic. Also appreciate the balance of personal and professional.”

A wonderful welcome reception capped the Opening Session’s first day as many members of the extended Leadership Council SMC community came to meet the Class of 2025. We were thrilled to see our Emerging Leaders/Leadership CORPS alumni, board members, sponsors, and partners return for the celebration!

We are honored that this community of impressive leaders has embarked on this journey with us. While we will see them for one day each month until graduation in June 2025, we know these are relationships that will develop and endure because of this shared experience. We can’t wait!

THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this year’s Opening Retreat a great success: The Team at Burlingame Community Center, Catering Connection & Cafe, San Mateo County Executive Mike Callagy, Chef Gilly, Mediterranean Kebab, Arguello Catering, Penelope’s Coffee, our Coaching Team (Laura Costain, Adrienne Donley, Rahul Khatod, and Sharvari Shetti), Damali Burton, Marcus L. Jackson Photography, and the many Leadership Council SMC board members, alumni, sponsors, and partners who joined us.
